Lake Shasta is the perfect spot for a vacation. There are many things to do and see. The lake is the third largest in California behind Lake Tahoe and the Salton Sea. Interestingly, the lake is located in northern California and is formed by four rivers. Water from the Sacramento, McCloud, Squaw and Pit Rivers form the lake. In addition, the lake is bordered by Shasta Dam. Shasta Dam is the second largest in the country. Imagine, the lake is 35 miles long with some 350 miles of shoreline.
There are many places to explore when you visit Shasta Lake. The lake is inside the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. It is a great spot for hikers and campers. The two main trails include the Green Creek Trail which is about 5.8 miles. Interestingly, the trail ends at the Bully Hill mine ruins. Scuba diving in the water around the mines is exciting. The second trail, Samwel Cave, ends at a natural cavern. Along the route, residents say it is not unusual to see elk, mountain lions and otters. There is no doubt that Shasta Lake is a great vacation destination.
